Every Sacramento summer brings a few weeks when the sky turns hazy and the air outside smells like a campfire. Here is the good news: with a few smart moves, the air inside your home can stay noticeably cleaner than the air outside.
This guide covers what actually works, in the order that matters most.
Step 1: Run the fan, not just the AC
Your HVAC system only filters air while the fan is moving. On smoke days, switch the thermostat fan setting from AUTO to ON. The system will pull air through the filter continuously instead of only during cooling cycles.
This one change turns your central system into a whole-home air cleaner.
Step 2: Upgrade the filter before the smoke arrives
The standard fiberglass filter that came with your system catches dust and lint. It does very little against smoke. Smoke particles are tiny — that is why they sting your eyes and reach deep into your lungs.
For smoke season, a pleated filter rated MERV 11 to 13 captures a meaningful share of those fine particles while still letting your system breathe. Check that your system can handle the higher rating; our certified technicians can confirm this in minutes during a regular visit.
Step 3: Keep the smoke outside
- Close up the house early. Windows and doors shut before the smoke settles in, not after.
- Skip the window fans and swamp coolers. Anything that pulls outside air in is working against you on smoke days.
- Check your door seals. Daylight visible around an exterior door means smoke gets in the same way.
- Run kitchen and bath fans briefly. Long run times pull smoky air in through every little gap.
Step 4: Give the cleanest room a boost
Pick the room where your family spends the most time and add a portable HEPA air cleaner sized for that room. Central filtration handles the whole house; the portable unit polishes the room you actually sit in.
- Thermostat fan: ON (not AUTO)
- MERV 11–13 pleated filter installed and clean
- Windows and doors closed and sealed
- Swamp cooler off; AC handles the cooling
- Portable HEPA unit in the main living space
Where your HVAC system fits in
A system with clean coils, a right-sized filter, and a healthy blower moves more air through the filter every hour — which means cleaner indoor air on the days it matters. That is one of the quiet benefits of regular maintenance most homeowners never hear about.
Our AC tune-up includes a filtration check, and our ProCare plan ($19.50/mo) keeps both seasonal tune-ups on the calendar so your system is ready before smoke season starts.
